I cannot count on two hands and two feet how many times I have had local business owners come to me and say “well, we has a website created by a cousin of ours and it looks terrible and its just not doing anything”. I understand that it may be the cheap approach and you may be saving money but at the same time, you’re actually losing money! Get a local Web Design company to build you a local business website that accurately reflects your brand, that looks great, that functions properly and that has all of the key elements in place such as contact forms, phone numbers, call to actions and most importantly, Google Analtytics, which I’ll go over shortly.Google PlacesGoogle Places and creating a listing on Google Places is a key Online Marketing aspect that most local businesses either forget or don’t know about. It is all well and good to have a website but your website isn’t going to get found by itself. Visit Google Places and submit your business as a starting point. Be sure to put a lot of effort into it and fill in all of the blanks as this could and should be a key source of traffic for your local business if done right. If you would like to know more about Local SEO and Google Places Optimisation, this article on tips for Local SEO may help you along your travels. If you do not have the confidence in your computer or online marketing skills, hire an SEO consultant to carry this out for you.Business ListingsCreating business listings will not only help your Google Places efforts but will also help you to generate new leads from people searching these directories for businesses like yours. You can either submit these yourself manually, have a SEO specialist do it for you or go ahead and do a search for “Local Directory Submission Service” in Google. This should bring up a whole host of different websites that offer to submit your Local Business Listings for a small fee which saves you time and, time is money.Social MediaSetup your Facebook page and Twitter profile, create a username or URL that corresponds to your business and actively use it, don’t just let it sit there. Social Media and Social Networking are huge these days and you can’t say that you are doing a good job with your Online Marketing efforts if you don’t have Facebook and Twitter setup and if you are not actively using them. You will be surprised at the amount of business that will come from your Facebook page and additionally, Twitter is good for keeping your customers engaged and up to date with the goings-on of your business.Google AnalyticsAll of the above steps are going to fail if you do not implement this one simple step! Make sure that you install Google Analytics on your website or else you will not be able to track the amount of visitors you get on your website, from your Google Places listing or from your Social Media accounts and Local Business Listings. You will not be able to track any of the movements that visitors make on your website either. So please, for your sake, ask your Web Designer or technical guys to help you to create your Google Analytics profile and insert the tracking code into your website.Phone & EmailI do a lot of Local Online Marketing for small business owners and find it unfathomable that some do not answer the phone or reply to emails. I sometimes throw dummy leads through their website to see if I get a response and how good their service is. Somehow, 50% of the time, the phone isn’t answered and somehow, they don’t respond to emails. A big part of your Local Online Marketing efforts are ensuring that you pick up the phone and respond to emails as these are most likely people trying to contact you through your website. Please, please, please! Ask your web guy or girl to setup a email address that matches your domain name, there is nothing more unprofessional than getting a response from a “business owner” from a Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail account. In addition to this and the Analytics section above, try to have phone or call tracking setup if possible. If you have enlisted someone to perform Local Lead Generation, this will most likely be done already but this will help you to track calls and lead and monitor your Online Marketing efforts.About the author: Lucas is the founder of GPSEO.com.au, a Google Places Optimisation and Local Lead Generation company based in Melbourne, Australia.
